FAQs Videos

Bluetooth speakers make it easy to gain freedom from your headphones—or even share your tunes with a larger group. And today’s best Bluetooth speakers are smaller, more powerful and provide better sound than ever before. Most are battery powered and great for personal sound, while others can get the party started by filling an entire room. Likewise, if you plan to use the speaker poolside, look for ruggedized speakers that can withstand sand, or waterproof Bluetooth speakers that float.

Bluetooth speakers work sort of like wireless headphones or earbuds, in that they pair with your smartphone, tablet or computer to stream audio without cables. You can control the audio from a connected device up to 150 feet away, depending on which Bluetooth version your speaker uses.

Whether you’re looking to use a Bluetooth speaker indoors at home, outdoors in the yard or while traveling, read on for our favorite picks for the best Bluetooth speakers.

Weight: 1.4 pounds | Battery life: Up to 27 hours | Volume: 91 dB | Waterproof rating: IP67

It’s designed to be durable and waterproof, and produces 360-degree sound that resonates clearly whether you are indoors or outdoors.

Best Extra-Loud Bluetooth Speaker

Bass Goes Boom With This Small-But-Mighty Speaker

Ultimate Ears Hyperboom

Weight: 13 pounds | Battery life: Up to 24 hours | Volume: 100 dB | Waterproof rating: IPX4

Best for: Party hosts who want to fill a large space with clear—and loud—music.

While it’s not a device meant to be handheld, the Ultimate Ears Hyperboom is portable and can sit on almost any surface. It represents Ultimate Ears’ biggest and loudest portable speaker, but volume isn’t this speaker’s only strength. Hyperboom’s extreme bass and adaptive equalizer provide a booming listening experience no matter what type of audio you pump through this speaker.

Hyperboom is truly a party-oriented speaker. With three times the loudness and six times the bass as its smaller sibling MegaBoom 3, this model can be paired with up to 150 devices at once so more than one person at a party can control the playlist. Editor’s Pick

Sonos Move

Weight: 6.6 pounds | Battery life: Up to 11 hours | Volume: Up to 85 dB | Waterproof rating: IP56

Best for: Adding booming audio inside your home.

The Sonos Move weighs 6.6 pounds, making it heavier and less portable than its smaller sibling, the Sonos Roam. At about 10 inches high, it’s best to find a place to put the speaker and leave it there. The Move maxes out at 85 dB—plenty loud for most environments.

As with the Sonos Roam, our overall best pick above, the Move uses Sonos’ Trueplay tuning to automatically calibrate audio based on the environment. Built-in microphones measure the surrounding sound and adjust accordingly. The Move fits seamlessly into a Sonos household, linking up to all your other Sonos speakers easily. On its own, the sound can fill a room with subtle, rich bass, but it’s less a party speaker than it is great choice for an individual or small group gathering. Its built-in microphones mean it has direct voice support with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant; and, you can connect an Amazon Echo device or Google Assistant device for voice control of the speaker, too.

Pros:

  • Dust- and water-resistant
  • Pairs with other Sonos speakers
  • Built-in microphone for voice control via Amazon Alexa and Google assistant

Cons:

How To Choose A Bluetooth Speaker

When it comes to choosing a Bluetooth speaker, the key feature to consider is sound quality. After all, you want to hear your audio clearly—without any distortion and at the volume you choose. A higher price does not always mean better sound quality, though. In some cases, you are paying a premium for a brand name. The physical size of the speaker may also impact sound quality and maximum volume.

While sound quality is what's most important when focusing on speakers, appearance may also be a consideration. After all, you don't want some ugly box sitting in your living room for all to see. Many Bluetooth speakers come in a choice of colors, so choose one with an aesthetic and vibe that fits your lifestyle.

Here are some other factors to consider when choosing a Bluetooth speaker to meet your personal needs.

Battery Life

Determine if a speaker is battery powered or needs to be plugged into an electrical outlet to function. If it's battery powered, choose a speaker with a battery that lasts at least 10 hours between charges. Also pay attention to how long the speaker’s battery takes to recharge and whether it can be used while recharging.

Volume

If you want to fill a larger room or space with sound, look for a speaker with a higher maximum volume (measured in decibels). For personal use or sound in a smaller room, a speaker that produces up to 70 dB audio should suffice.

Prolonged use and close range exposure to audio louder than 70 dB can damage your hearing. Meanwhile, anything louder than 120 dB will cause immediate harm to your ears. With this in mind, a speaker that offers a 360-degree (or “spatial”), room-filling sound field will allow the audio to be clearly heard from all directions. You won't need to position yourself directly in front of or next to the speaker.

Waterproof (IP Rating)

Depending on where you place the speaker, whether a speaker has a water resistance or waterproof rating may not matter. However, if you plan to take the speaker outside—or might want that option—go with a speaker with at least a water-resistant rating.

All Bluetooth speaker manufacturers use an industry-standard system to rate a product’s ability to withstand dirt, dust and water. This is a standard created by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA). What you’ll see advertised is a speaker’s IP (ingress protection) or IPX rating.

Let’s break down what these ratings mean. With two-digit IP ratings, the first digit refers to the product’s degree of protection against solid objects (sand, dirt or dust). The second number is the degree of protection the product has against water. By contrast, an IPX rating followed by a one digit number indicates the product hasn’t been tested to withstand damage from solid objects.

For protection against solid objects, the scoring scales up to 6, where a higher number reflects the amount and size of the individual solid objects the device can withstand. A 3 indicates the device is good against solid objects 2.5 millimeters in size or larger, while a 6 indicates the device has protection against dust particles. In the event the device hasn’t been tested against solid objects, the rating will reflect as IPX, where “X” indicates the lack of testing, and the number that follows the X reflects the level of waterproof rating.

The second digit of an IP rating (or the single digit of the IPX rating) can be between zero and eight. A one rating means the product is protected against water drops (so it’s water-resistant, not waterproof). A four rating means water can be splashed on the object from any angle without causing damage, while a seven rating means the product can be fully submerged in water up to a three foot depth. An eight rating means the product is fully protected when submerged in water up to 13 feet.

An IP68 rating, for example, means the speaker is both resistant to dirt/dust and is waterproof. It can temporarily be submerged in up to 13 feet of water without sustaining damage. In other words, if you get caught in a sudden rain shower while using a speaker outside, or if it accidentally gets dropped in a swimming pool, you have nothing to worry about. It is also protected against sand from a beach. But an IPX6 rating means the speaker can get wet or float, but has no protection sand.

Size And Weight

Again, depending on where you plan to use the speaker and how large of an area you want the sound to reach, the size and weight of the speaker itself is an important consideration. This is also important if you plan to carry around the speaker. Choose a speaker with a size and weight that best meets your needs.

As a general rule, the larger the speaker the more power it has for playing loud music in a large party space. The smaller speakers are better suited for a more intimate listening experience—as an alternative to wearing headphones or earbuds when enjoying your favorite audio.

Bluetooth Range

The Bluetooth range of the various speakers does vary. Pay attention to this feature if you know you want the flexibility of being more than 33 or so feet away from the speaker when controlling it remotely or streaming content to it (for example, if you plan to walk away from the speaker to another room, and take your phone—the streaming source—with you). Most Bluetooth speakers have a wireless range of about 33 feet. This is the distance it can be from the smartphone, computer or device it is streaming music from. However, when the Bluetooth speaker uses a more advanced version of Bluetooth, like Bluetooth 5.3, the wireless range increases up to 150 feet.

So, if you want to be able to stream music from your computer or mobile device when the speaker is more than 33 feet away, look for a speaker using the more recent versions of Bluetooth. The latest specification is Bluetooth 5.3, and to achieve the maximum benefit, both source and destination devices need to use the latest Bluetooth technology.

Voice Assistants

Some Bluetooth speakers are designed to work in conjunction with a voice-based digital assistant, such as Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant or Apple Siri. If this is functionality you want, determine if the smart assistant is built into the speaker itself (which is rare). In this case, the speaker would need to connect to a Wi-Fi network to be able to access the digital assistant.

Most of the time the Bluetooth speaker gives you access to a compatible digital assistant as long as it’s paired with a smartphone, tablet or computer that has the digital assistant built in and accessible, so be sure to look for a speaker with support for the smart assistant you’re already using with your phone, for example. And that it has a microphone, to support using smart assistants.

Special Features

If you plan to use the speaker at a beach, near a pool or on a boat, also seek out a speaker can float. If you drop a speaker into the water, it’s one thing not to damage it. It’s another thing altogether if it sinks and becomes difficult or impossible to retrieve. While many speakers are waterproof, not all can float, so look for this feature.

(Video) TOP 5: Best Bluetooth Speaker 2022

Also, many speakers have a proprietary mobile app. This app may provide additional features such as pairing two speakers together, or control over how your audio sounds with equalizer adjustments.

Mono, Stereo Or Spatial 360-Degree Sound?

Most Bluetooth speakers are able to generate loud and vibrant sound, but it’s not truly stereo sound unless the single portable speaker unit is designed to generate stereo using two (or more) internal speakers. But if you purchase two of the same Bluetooth speakers (or in some cases, two speakers from the same manufacturer), they can often be paired together and used simultaneously to generate true stereo sound that’s even louder.

Several of the Bluetooth speaker designs are not true stereo, but they do offer spatial 360-degree audio. An example of this is the Bang & Olufsen Beosound Explore: The speaker radiates music in all directions. As a result, if you place the speaker in the center of the room, it fills the entire space with audio. You do not need to be directly in front of the speaker to hear the audio.
