Incredible Value from the ATH-M50x Headphones

Looking for amazing value in professional monitor headphones? Sweetwater has a great suggestion: ATH-M50x closed-back headphones. A-T’s flagship M series ’phones are best sellers, featuring 45mm neodymium magnet drivers that deliver the accurate frequency response and stunning detail you need to make sound decisions when you’re recording, mixing, or DJing. The closed-back design gives you superior isolation with minimal bleed, while the circumaural earpads give you cushy comfort during long sessions. Factor in their space-saving collapsible design, swivel earcups, and detachable (both straight and coiled) cables, and you have a winner. Consider the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x headphones today for your studio or casual listening.

Closed-back vs. open-back headphones

Sometimes referred to as simply “closed” and “open,” this distinction addresses the design of the part of the headphone that covers the area behind the driver in a straight line away from the side of your head. Closed-back headphones like the ATH-M50x prevent sound from escaping and leaking into your microphone. The downside of this design is that it traps pressure inside the headphone, which creates false low frequencies. Open-back headphones, on the other hand, don’t suffer from this issue. They deliver outstanding accuracy and clarity that are suitable for critical listening.

Circumaural vs. supra-aural headphones

In layman’s terms, these words simply mean “over ear” (circumaural) and “on ear” (supra-aural). In the case of headphones, this refers to the design of the earcup, which is the cushion that sits between the headphone’s speakers (drivers) and your ear. Supra-aural headphones are rarely used for professional applications; although, they’re great for casual listening — especially if you need to be aware of what’s going on around you. On the other hand, over-ear headphones such as the ATH-M50x offer excellent attenuation of external noise.

great quality

good job sweetwater-
Love everything that comes out of this. I use it for work, for field mixing, mainly vocals. It has the right amount of isolation and the everything is proportional. From the lows, mids, to the highs. Great sound.
I will admit - I'm biased towards Audio-Technica products. WHY you ask? (Even if you didn't ;-). Their products are well-made from good materials with exceptional workmanship. And they do what they are supposed to do. I already owned a pair of ATH-M20 headphones and liked them. Enough so that I used them for about five years in our community radio station's broadcast and production studios. The only thing I did was replace the soft earcups because my makeup made them kinda gross after five years! Alcohol and various solutions didn't help and I felt a hand sledge hammer with a cold steel chisel might be a tad excessive. So, I replaced the earcups instead and voila! The headphones are like new again. But that set isn't what I mean to write about, here… My new ATH-M50X headphones are *sweet* - especially with three different cords and a nice bag to keep everything in. As for the sound, it's sublime - full, well balanced through comfortable over-the-ear earcups and soft headband. The different length cords are great - secure click as I insert the connector. The four foot cord is great for my recording console at home. In the studio, I use the eight to ten foot coiled cord to move about and the straight ten foot cord is available for gigs or whatever. I find it very convenient having the different length cords. The price isn't bad at all, given the quality of these headphones. Audio Technical, you have a winner in these headphones! Call me a satisfied customer :-)
Perfect set of head phones .they have excellent sound one neat feature is the cord for these head phones is how the cord hooks up . You can change the style of cord you want to use .or do like I did get the 25 foot extension cord you will be able to move around more at a further distance.
These are great monitoring headphones--accurate and reliable sound! Definitely recommend for any recording/studio work!

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?

Sami Ross-LaMotte

One thing I’ve learned from working in audio production for 6 years is that a great pair of headphones
makes all the difference in the world. I got a pair of these headphones at the beginning of my career and have been using them ever since! From production sound mixing for movies to editing podcasts and TV shows in my office, the M50x headphones give me the clarity, noise cancellation, and comfort over long periods of time that I’m looking for. No ear fatigue here!

Bo Freeman

For 5 plus years the Audio Technica ATH-M50x’s have been my go to reference headphones for monitoring during recording and live performances. When recording as a multi-instrumentalist or playing/singing live, the comfort and particular hype these give are often the reason I don’t want to stop. Plus I can’t tell you how often I’ve dropped, stepped on, or rolled over the cord on these yet these things still look and act brand new. These help me reference my mixes in a biased environment and keep my music translating to the real world with ease.

Cristian Good

Like any experienced live sound engineer, I depend on the accuracy of my headphones, but they also need to be comfortable. I've loved my Audio-Technica ATH-M50x monitoring headphones from the minute I got them, because they're both detailed and comfortable enough that I can wear them all night, without getting fatigued. I don't just use them for gigs - they're also perfect for just listening to music.

FAQs

Is Audio-Technica ATH-M50x worth it? ›

Yes, the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x are absolutely worth it. These headphones are extremely versatile and so regardless of what you use them for (streaming, gaming, listening to music, etc.) you can be assured that you are getting an excellent pair of headphones for a great price.

Are Audio Technica M50x closed-back? ›

Over-Ear, Sound-Isolating Design

The ATH-M50x utilizes a circumaural design that contours around the ears for excellent sound isolation in loud environments. This over-ear, closed-back style is optimal for reducing bleed and separating you from outside sounds.

Is ATH-M50x good for studio? ›

The ATH-M50x is the best studio monitor headphones for the money, but they're not perfect studio headphones. These headphones have exceptional comfort, accuracy, and detail. Still, their sound cannot be described as perfectly linear, and their bass is slightly emphasized for good tracking of low-frequency instruments.

Why do people hate the Audio-Technica M50x? ›

Perhaps some of the hate against the M50X seems like it's just because they are mega-popular. Or maybe, it comes from unrealistic expectations for the sound of a “studio monitor,” especially in this price range. Comfort is another point of contention I've seen. Some feel they're too clampy.

Why are M50x so good? ›

The Audio-Technica ATH-M50x are above-average closed-back critical listening headphones. They have an excellent, and well-balanced audio reproduction. They feel sturdy, and the large ear cups fit comfortably over most ears. They're simple and straightforward headphones for enjoying your music.

Is m50x high impedance? ›

The M50 has a relatively low impedance (38 ohms) and a lowish sensitivity (99 dB). That combination means the amp has to supply more current. Some amps just can't supply the necessary current for low impedance headphones and when they can't they distort. The same amp may do fine with higher impedance headphones.

Are ATH-M50X good for casual listening? ›

The Audio-Technica ATH-M50X is a long-awaited update to one of the most respected professional audio headphones. If you're looking for a reasonably-price pair that can work in a home recording setup and also do double duty for casual listening, then go order a pair right away.

Whats better than the M50X? ›

The MSR7 is a better-looking, better-sounding, more comfy M50X. It doesn't collapse as well, and it doesn't have the locking cable system. Everything else about it is better. It's one of the few headphones I can easily say is better than the M50X.
